Blog post #4

Technology is all over, there are many positive uses for technology. A car would be one major technology we depend on every day. Things that people don’t even think about. Digital technology has also became dependent on. Some many business, the government, and banks rely majorly on computer systems. Everything it seems is internet based, you want to apply for a job, go online, check your back or billing statement, it’s online. I think it has its pros because the information can be accessed almost anywhere in the world. The downside though, would be if you don’t have access to the internet, or a computer for that matter.

In Sherry Turkle’s TED talk her purpose was to inform, persuade, and entertain the viewers about the influence of technology on our behaviors. She informs the viewers of the effects of people always being on their phones. She also persuades the viewers by making valid points of being together but in a sense alone, and its entertainment to people because technology is growing, and society is adapting to these ways of life. I think she did succeed in the TED talk by adding real life examples and stories to connect it to the points she’s making. She even relates her own life to the talk, which I think is effective.  She also is a psychologist and references it other work she’s done, and talks about how long she’s been working on her studies.  I agree what her TED talk, people are losing the ability to communicate face to face and relying on technology to replace boredom. I think technology is great, but people need to have boundaries.

"Connected but alone"

In “Connected, but alone” TED talk, Sherry Turkle explains the effects that technology is having on people’s relationships, and lives. The things we do with our mobile devices now, we of never did years ago. People are so caught up with having control of where there attention is, always being heard, and never being alone that it’s consuming having conversations and interaction with each other. We expect more from our devices today than we do from each other.  It’s easier to text someone or email them, because you can have time to think of a response, a lot of people “rather text than talk”. People like the feeling of how they can be elsewhere but also in real time. Like people in class, business meetings, and even at work are constantly are on their Facebook, emails, etc. Being alone together but also elsewhere.
When I think of research I think of scientific evidence that’s proven. Research is gathering and searching for information on a given subject, which then is interpreted and analyzed. The process of research is useful to learn new information and material. My experience with research is somewhat fresh. I had to do two, 6-10 pages research paper for music history 1 and music history 2, but that’s the only experience I’ve had. We were allowed to pick the topics which made it easier for me. The actual papers were somewhat simple, but find the information took the longest. After I had all the information and sources it was just all about putting it together as a whole.
